How to paint realistic water and glass

Ever wondered how to paint a glass of water in watercolour? Or how to paint a glass vase and get a realistic result?

In this little video I show you how it’s done, by first breaking down what you see into lots of shapes of different colours and then recreating them with your paint:

Why not experiment with these effects in your sketchbook and then use them to give your flower portraits the WOW factor!

If you enjoyed the video, please leave me a comment below, it makes my day to read them.

Happy painting,

Very timely. I’m working (whenever I’m up to it since I also run a handcraft biz and conducting sewing workshops) on a painting of a peonie in a glass vase.

Thank you for all your information!! For years, I have done oils and then acrylics, but watercolors warm my heart and soul! I am learning, and have a long, long way to go but I so enjoy them. You are my inspiration, I am so taken by your talent. Thanks for sharing, I will be praying for Little Ben, it takes a lot of bumps to get a child raised. Enjoy each second, they grow so fast!

Thank you for showing how to paint a glass vase. It looks real. I have been trying to paint frost pushing up from the ground with a seed on top and have been struggling with it. Do you use the same process.

This was excellent as always . I especially appreciated the way you tinted the areas on the photo as you were describing your process. Often with the light pencil drawing & the very light washes I have found it hard to actually see where you were painting. This was very helpful., thank you. I hope you little boy heals quickly.

Hi Anna ,sorry to hear about your little one but at least he is on the mend .
I haven’t painted for some time now and your little demo of glass painting has got me interested again ,gardening tends to take over in the summer but now that the weather has changed I shall be picking up my brushes again .
    It’s inspiration I lack .

Hi Anna, I have enjoyed your water-in-a-vase so much. Your unhurried and uncluttered delivery gives a focussed stepwise description yet remains informal and smiley!
Makes me want to overcome the Where-do-I-begin problem.
And so many caring Mumsy comments for Ben and for you too. Having raised 3 sons just see this accident as a wisdom moment for other occasions .
    Thanks agin
