Introducing…baby Fern
I’d love to introduce you to my beautifully cuddly little daughter, Fern.
After a couple of years of heartbreaking infertility my husband Phil & went through IVF to have our son Ben in 2017 (which you can read about here). That was super demanding emotionally for us both and physically really demanding for me (not so much for Phil, you can guess what minimal physical involvement he had to have! Haha).
We were lucky enough to have some embryos frozen then, and the plan was to use one to try to have a sibling for Ben when the time felt right. Well, having Ben was itself really physically demanding as any parents reading know. And after nearly a year I was just beginning to think about when to book in with the clinic (and not much looking forward to the process). It was hard to decide the ‘perfect’ timing, as it felt really weird to be making the decision at all.
When Ben was due to turn 1 we booked to go on holiday for a week to sunny Ibiza (no we didn’t go clubbing!! There’s actually really nice family-friendly parts to the island). Life felt like it was getting more manageable after the chaos of the first year. And as I’d just stopped breastfeeding I was enjoying the red wine.
But while we were there.. this happened:
Yes, that’s “pregnant” in Spanish! We had to double check we’d translated that properly. No IVF. It felt like a dream. And a miracle. And a total blessing (except for the fact that my red wine drinking had to stop!). I’d heard of this happening to people before, but it was the sort of thing I thought happened to other people only.
The pregnancy itself felt horrible, much like the last one. I felt ill the whole time, with bad morning sickness followed by constant stuffy nose and frequent colds, gestational diabetes and an alarming racing pulse. I wasn’t surprised to read last week that pregnancy pushes us to the edge of our physical limits!
But it’s been worth it and now, thank goodness, our family is complete (I CANNOT go through pregnancy again!). Ben’s adjusting to having his little sister around and looking forward to playing with her when she’s old enough.
2 under 2 is FULL ON, and I need to work out how to fit more hours into the day, or how to exist on even less sleep so I can do some painting too!

A miracle baby surrounded by love she is adorable
She is BEAUTIFUL!!! Just like her Mom! Congratulations!! You sure you don’t want to do what I did and have four under five years old? You don’t have a life for about twenty years but they do grow up so, so fast!
I had four under five as well – very hectic but I loved it1
Ditto, Melinda…………and before the days of disposable diapers and microwave ovens ! I loved it with all its challenges. They are now thriving adults to be proud of adding 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren (so far.) to wonderful family gatherings. Children are such a blessing.
She looks so cuddly, Congratulations ! I am so pleased for you. You will soon get into a routine. Before you know it they will be painting with you, but in the meantime I hope we will see some paintings that you have done of your lovely children..

Wonderful news. Yes I had the same thing. All 9 months morning sickness, dislocated a rib in the process. Gestational Diabetes as well as going in and out of the hospital because she was trying to come out early. But like you said worth it. She’s the second and now 22 years old. God bless your family. Hi Anna, little Fern looks absolutely gorgeous, and you look amazing. We are expecting our 6th grandchild in July and have our fingers crossed for a girl, so far it has all been boys!
Oh wow Sally, 5 boys! I wonder if it’ll be 6! It’s funny how it goes like that. My Gran died a few years ago, and at the time she had 12 girl great-grandchildren! Since then my brother has a bit and so have I but still, that’s a lot of girls!
What a blessing for you both. Two under two is demanding and I share that understanding with you, but you come out okay- maybe less hair, sleep, food and energy but what a gift children are. When they are grown and become your best friends you know it was worth it all. Thanks to you, Anna, I have found my love of painting again after many years of sacrifice- and oh, how I love it. Wow, what can I say that hasn’t been said already? Fern is adorable, and yes, she does look just like you. Congratulations, you have a beautiful family …..and talk about doing your part for conservation: no one has more than 4 letters in their name lol (Anna, Phil, Ben, Fern). Sorry to hear you also acquired gestational diabetes – no fun at all! Believe it or not, I know: I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 42 years, and am well aware of the challenges the disease presents every day (if not every hour). Here’s to your newly expanded family and a full glass of wine.

Here is an incredible story for you, my friend Camille tried for 6 years to have a child, no luck. So she finally agreed to adopt a little boy from her doctor through a private adoption. She was so excited to go and get her baby, her stomach was jittery and sick. She and her husband Charlie picked him up and becuase she was still sick after a week, she went to the doctor, guess what? She was pregnant, with another boy, 6 months apart. Now it is easy and they have 2 boys and 2 girls. God works in funny ways.

Way. To go! Fern is beautiful and she will bring you much joy…and a few challenges. We have friends who went through IVF for their first child. Then 11 months later gave birth to twins (surprise!) Oh much joy! Then, 10 months later had triplets! In less than 3 years they went from 0 to 5 kids under 3 1/2 years! Needless to say, their family is complete!

What a little beauty! Clever girl Anna. Yes 2 under 2 really ups the stress and downs the sleep. I experienced that joy with my eldest 2 – also a girl and boy. You need to really put your well being first before any other concerns. You crack under the stress and your loved ones will suffer. Work should be put on the back burner for a while. Your site is well set up; so it’s not as if there is not enough for members to get on with for at least 6 months. All the best. Please sit back and enjoy these moments with your little ones, and your husband. You deserve it ….. and so do they

Congratulations Anna. I had three daughters in less than three years. So I understand the stress of babies clothes together. I went on to have two more. So a total of four daughters and one son. I didn’t make it they are all grown now and now we have six grandsons. Oh my goodness what a beautiful gift you have received. A miracle indeed and well deserved Anna. You give so much joy to all of us through your Art school. Children are gifts from God and Fern is definitely a special little girl . Enjoy the journey with your little ones and hopefully they will become your best friends as they grow older. Take it from me the special bond between mother and daughter is amazing. I am having the most rewarding time with my daughter we are the best of friends.

Hope you are able to get plenty of rest, but realise that is next to impossible with two darling little ones now.
Maybe a maiden hair Fern might be a lovely painting challenge when you feel able to do a little painting again in the future. It is such a dainty delicate and beautiful fern.

You have really been through a lot. You must have been ecstatic after reading the pregnancy test. What a relief to know you didn’t need IVF to have baby Fern. I am so happy for you and your family.
Now, let me just tell you. The photos of Fern, WOW, I think she’s the prettiest baby I’ve ever seen! She’s gorgeous. Such perfect little facial features. And, even though I am not a mother myself, I have to agree with the other people commenting…..take your time getting back to your work/painting/blog etc. Personally, I have no idea how mothers do it all. I’ve been ‘almost’ off the grid for the past month, travelling up the west cost of the U.S, into Canada, and into Alaska so I am just seeing your post now.

Beautiful baby and congratulations all round. Funny how nature, or God , whichever you believe takes a hand in our lives, I believe all people are meant to be, there are no accidents, maybe just miracles, or surprises !
I have grandchildren now, 4, they were all around yesterday, organised chaos. My own two, a boy then a girl were 14.5 months apart, and yes planned close due to circumstances. They grow up very quickly but highlights were going to the toilet on their own, wonderful, going through the night, our son…31/2 years old, groan, even then we would have nights of musical beds, 4 people in one bed is too many !
You will be tired, you will be exhausted, you will be happy, you will have a blast with paints and paper all over the floor, hopefully some of the paint will be on the paper as well, I had my kitchen cabinets and conservatory walls painted for me once whilst on the phone….
You may have to invest in big brushes and adopt a looser style though, ha ha.
Wishing you many happy years of fun, exploring, days out, days spent looking at the dust, and housework and thinking, so what !
All the very best to you and your family, they are a blessing and in the end only people and our animals matter, everything else is just stuff
