How to paint a popping pink flower in watercolour

When aiming for realism in a painting, I often paint subjects significantly larger than life so that I can capture as much detail in them as possible.

But some subjects don’t have much detail in them at all.

And that makes them suitable candidates for being painted at a smaller size, without losing detail.

Working at a smaller size means that a piece can be completed much more quickly, often in just one sitting.

That’s what I did with this pretty Rose Periwinkle flower (also known as Madagascan Periwinkle). Much of its beauty comes from its bright colour and simple shape, meaning my painting of it could be finished really quickly.

And the shading I added to it really made it pop off the paper.

Key to achieving realism in this painting was to pay close attention to the tones, which helped me to create a 3D result in a short painting session.

In this mini class, I show you the steps I followed:

I hope this mini class has shown you that it’s possible to achieve a realistic, bright and 3D flower in a short space of time, and that you’ll give it a go yourself.
