Painting Landscapes en Plein Air – Yosemite Half Dome
Painting landscapes can be a really fun and mindful way to connect to a place – whether it’s somewhere special to you, a place you’ve visited, or somewhere you’d love to go.
In this mini class, I’m inviting you to put on your imaginary hiking boots and be transported to the heart of Yosemite Valley in the USA. You’ll join my friend, travel artist Shelly Perkins, who is creating an expressive painting of Half Dome, the iconic rock which towers over the horizon at 8,800 feet tall.
Shelly’s working ‘en plein air’, on location, painting the breathtaking scenery which is in front of her – and racing against time to complete the painting and hike back before the sun sets! Painting landscapes has never been so exciting!
Looking over her shoulder, you’ll see all the stages Shelly works in, building up layers of colour and texture in this lively line and wash landscape scene.
The loose painting style and Shelly’s expressive mark making make her paintings very visually appealing and energetic. If you haven’t tried painting landscapes in this way, I encourage you to give it a try! It’s lots of fun.
So I hope you’ll enjoy being whisked away on a mini armchair adventure with Shelly, and taking in the stunning scenery.
Watch the landscape painting mini class:
If this mini class has got you fired up for painting landscapes of more places, or if it’s given you the armchair-adventure-travel-bug, you can join Shelly in another mini class for more plein air painting. In this mini class, you’ll be transported to a spectacular bluebell meadow in Shropshire, UK, where Shelly will share more tips for painting landscapes en plein air.
Please do leave a comment below if you enjoyed being taken on this mini adventure, and if you feel inspired to have a go at painting landscapes in Shelly’s style. If you’ve never been to Yosemite Valley before and enjoyed being taken there by Shelly, let us know too! We love hearing from you.
Happy painting,

That was a fabulous video. Thank you. Took me back 35 years to when I saw half moon in Yosemite myself. I hope to have a go at this painting too.
lnspiring – can’t wait ’til after the holidays when I have a little time to give this a try! Thank you.
I really enjoyed watching your quick tutorial of painting one of my all time favorites. I have hiked to the top of half dome when I was younger and got married on a balcony of the iconic hotel there in the valley with half dome accompanying us in the background. Thank you for sharing 😊
Hi Anna
I have not yet done the landscape, but I did your pear class and calla lilly. I am hooked. I love how you prepare for the lesson and how you teach.
I wanted to sign up for the membership offered at half off a month or so ago, but I couldn’t log on due to forgetting my password
I tried three times and never got an email back to help reset.
Help please. I want to create with you.
Thank you for the wonderful inspiration. Painting in the “en plein air” style makes you feel a deep connection with nature, and Shelly’s approach makes the painting experience more lively and creative.
