How to paint a colorful watercolor Orchid
Painting bright flowers can be a mood booster at any time of year. Especially when they’re covered in pretty patterns.
But patterned flowers can be tricky to paint when the petal background is a bright colour and the pattern is also a bold hue.
You have to be really careful that the colours don’t mix and muddy on the paper.
In this mini class, I’ll show you the process I followed to paint a bright, colourful watercolor orchid. It’s a Cymbidium, nicknamed the ‘boat orchid’ because of the shape of its lip.
As you’ll see, I painted it at a really enlarged scale so that I could include as much of its pretty pattern detail as possible.
Take a look to find out how I painted this colourful, patterned watercolor orchid without muddying the colours.
I hope you found this mini class helpful and that you’re feeling inspired to paint your own brightly-coloured watercolor orchid.
In another mini class, I show you how to paint another kind of orchid: a stripy Phalaenopsis.
If you paint your own orchid after watching, or if you enjoyed this video, I’d love to hear from you, so please make my day and leave me a comment below.

This is stupendous! If you have a moment (ha!) is there any chance that you’ll be turning this into a step-by-step tutorial, or even offer a drawing? I’d love to try it someday. Orchids are my favorite flower. I’m about to try your white one with the golden background to give as a wedding present. I’m so eternally grateful to you!
Another wonderful demonstration, thank you. I must admit I had to do some research about Ibiza… looks like a place I’d love to visit. Maybe someday I too will holiday there. Just stunning from all the pictures I looked at in my “Google search.”

G’day- if you think this is bright? Shameless plug for Aussie orchid Theylmitra variegata aka Queen of Sheba. Critically endangered, a decade to flower, but the colours on opening are incredible.
Terry Dunham’s photo in this article shows it best, but I’m sure you could find others.
