Realistic Mushroom Drawing in Pencil

You might be surprised to know that I used my watercolour method when I made this realistic mushroom drawing in graphite pencil.

Even though I didn’t use a drop of water, or any colour at all.

If you’re familiar with my painting method, you’ll know that it’s all about working in layers and building up tone gradually.

And as I show you in this mini class, the process when working in graphite pencil is no different.

When I demonstrate this pencil layering process with a botanical mushroom drawing, you’ll see that it goes through all the same stages as a painting in my watercolour method.

I really hope this video has inspired you to reach for a pencil and some paper to have a go at this yourself.

The best thing about this is that you don’t need any paints, brushes or special equipment to just have a go.

All you need is a pencil and a piece of paper.

If you enjoy drawing yours and want to have more fun with fungi, have a look at this class where I show you how to paint mushrooms using watercolour.

Please leave a comment below if you’ve enjoyed this 3D mushroom drawing in pencil class. I’d love to hear from you, especially if you’ve had a go at the layering process in pencil.

I enjoyed spending today’s sketching time with you. My mushroom does not look like yours, but I figure I just need to make a few more to practice getting the tones right.

    Hello Anna,
After several years of your watercolour classes and filling the walls of my house as well as that of friends, I was ready for something new and pencil drawing has gripped me. However, I struggled with the decisions on tones! Relating it to the watercolour lessons is something I had never thought of – thank you, I will certainly give it a try!

You are a treasure Anna. I am presently dealing with ‘writer’s cramp’, but hope to be able to overcome it. Then I will launch into drawing mushrooms! Thankyou for your generous sharing, your short tutorials give me a lift and encouragement not to give in.

Thank you for adding this to your courses. Wish it were taught this way to young children so they never got it in their heads that they couldn’t draw. I will be passing this along to my grandchildren. Making the world a more beautiful place, one mind at a time 🙂 Happy New Year!
